General Spider Management for the Do It Yourself Pest Control Person
Remember that spiders are primarily beneficial and their activities should be encouraged in the garden. Pesticide control is not always necessary. The best approach to controlling spiders in and around the home is to remove hiding spots for reclusive spiders such as black widows and regularly clean webs off the house with brooms, brushes and vacuums.
Prevention
Spiders may enter homes and other structures through cracks and other openings. They also may be carried in on items like plants, firewood, and boxes. Regular vacuuming or sweeping of windows, corners of rooms, storage areas, basements, and other seldom used areas helps remove spiders and their webs. Vacuuming spiders can be an effective control technique because their soft bodies usually do not survive this process. Indoors, a web on which dust has gathered is an old web that is no longer being used by a spider. To prevent spiders from coming indoors, seal cracks in the foundation and other parts of the structure and gaps around windows and doors. Good screening not only will keep out many spiders but also will discourage them by keeping out insects that they must have for food. To help reduce their usefulness as harborage areas, place boxes and other items off the floor and away from walls, whenever possible for spiders. Sealing the boxes with tape will prevent spiders from taking up residence within them. Clean up clutter in garages, sheds, basements, and other storage areas. Be sure to wear gloves to avoid accidental bites. Outdoors, eliminate places for spiders to hide and build their webs by keeping the area next to the foundation free of trash, leaf litter, heavy vegetation, and other accumulations of materials. Trimming plant growth away from the home and other structures will discourage spiders from first taking up residence near the structure and then moving indoors. Outdoor lighting attracts insects, which in turn attracts spiders. If possible, keep lighting fixtures off structures and away from windows and doorways. Sweep, mop, hose, or vacuum webs and spiders off buildings regularly.
Do It Yourself Pest Control Treatment for many Spider problems
- Treat the interior with a residual insecticide such as Demand CS, or Suspend SC as a light fan spray to areas of concern, under couches, beds, behind furniture, and other areas; these products are totally odorless and won’t stain anything unless water alone will stain it , these products can last 60 to 90 days and work better on spiders than most other products
- Place glue boards in same areas the next day, anything caught on the glue boards will also attract the spiders.
- Treat the outside with a residual liquid such as Demand CS, Demon WP, Suspend SC, or Talstar P. Be sure to treat at least one foot up the foundation wall, under the siding, eaves, corners and other areas where spiders collect. You should also spray all entry points into the home such as window sills, door jams, weep holes, and any other holes in the building exterior. Spraying the harborage areas such as under mulch, black plastic, holes or cracks in cinder block walls, retainer walls or hollow trees will also help
- Using Talstar PL granules in a 5 to 8 foot perimeter band around the building will help; use 3 to 4 times a year, you can also treat areas away from the building that harbor spiders and other pests
- Use Cy-Kick CS, 221L Residual Aerosol, or MotherEarth 2% PY, applied to cracks and crevices where spiders and other pests hide. Be sure to pay attention to plumbing areas, wall voids, and under cabinets. Pay special attention to any areas of your home where there is water; this includes the refrigerator, air conditioner, dishwasher, laundry room and all of the plumbing. This will help control the spiders food source and therefore help control the spiders
- Delta Dust will last for up to 7 months when left undisturbed and best to be used as a crack and crevice and in wall voids, the same areas as the aerosols, but can also be used to dust in crawl spaces and any other void areas where moisture is a problem, this will help control the spiders food source and therefore help control the spiders

Black Widow Spiders may be up to 3/4 inch in length with the abdomen reaching 3/8 inch in diameter, this is usually when she is ready to lay her eggs; she might become slightly aggressive. Glossy black with the red markings of an hourglass shape (May be other shapes, but will usually still be close to the hourglass), may also be dark brown to light brown. Other species of widow spiders may be brown.
Black Widow Spiders construct irregular, scaffold-type webs usually near the ground level in protected areas, such as under your siding, in firewood, between boxes, in items piled together and in small protected holes; and other dark, damp areas. Newly hatched spiderlings climb to highpoints, release a strand of webbing and are propelled by "ballooning" to new locations (many species of spiders use this method to find new web locations). For this reason, buildings may have new spiderlings float to it on a regular basis. Most of these spiders do not survive. Black widows eat any insect they can capture. It is not true that the female always consumes her mate after mating, but very often this is the case.
Black Widow Spiders are classified as dangerous spiders because their bite can cause severe cramping and pain throughout the body. Very young children, the elderly, and the very ill persons are most at risk for severe reactions to the bite of this spider. Bites most frequently occur when people are picking up an item under which the spider is hiding or putting on a shoe the spider has crawled into. The black widow spider is widely feared because its bite results in severe pain that may take several days to subside. Such bites are rarely fatal but small children and elderly persons are at risk. Many bites are reported in outhouses (deer camps and other facilities) where the black widow likes to spin her web below the toilet seat. (Check before sitting down)
Black widows prefer to construct their webs in secluded, protected sites where insects are more likely to show up. Clutter creates numerous spaces suitable for spider harborage. Keeping boxes and other items stored neatly and away from walls is one step to reduce the number of these spiders in or around a home.

The Brown Recluse is usually light brown, but may be darker in some specimens. The key identifying characteristics are the six eyes arranged in three pairs at the front of the head area and the fiddle-shaped marking on the back. The Brown Recluse spider is often called the violin or fiddle back spider, because of its distinctive fiddle-shaped marking on top of the body (cephalothorax) head end to which the legs are attached.
Like most spiders, the Brown Recluse spider does not seek to bite people. The bite is usually accidental. The spider crawls into a shoe, into clothing or into a bed and a person then puts on the clothing or lies on the spider in bed. The spider, being trapped, has only one defense - and that is to bite. Unfortunately, the bite of this spider produces a nasty bite, this usually results in an open, ulcerating sore. Left untreated, such bites often become infected and significant tissue necrosis can occur. It is always best to seek medical attention, preferably from a dermatologist (try to take the spider that bit you if possible), if you think you may have a spider bite. This is especially true in areas where brown recluse spiders are common. The Brown Recluse is a passive hunter and doesn’t build the normal spider web, so glue boards can help control this spider.
Most spiders that are thought to be a Brown Recluse are actually the Southern House spider. The Southern House spider has eight eyes grouped together, rather than the six eyes in three pairs on the Brown Recluse.
